About us

We are MY team – working together to provide compassionate, expert care that makes a difference to the lives of our patients and their families.

Mid Yorkshire is a local Trust providing compassionate, expert care for over half a million people every year, in their homes, in the community and across our three hospital sites at Pontefract, Dewsbury and Pinderfields.

We believe everyone matters. We recognise everyone has unique experiences, and we strive to give care that meets each person’s needs. Our staff are as diverse as the communities we serve. And we believe we are stronger when we celebrate, value and support our differences.

We believe if our staff are happy, our patients experience will be positive. We’re listening, learning and improving because we aim to make Mid Yorkshire the best place to work and the best place for care. We support each other through the good and challenging times.

And we’re proud to make a difference to the lives of our patients and their families.

The Trust provides acute hospital and community health services to more than half a million people living in the Wakefield and North Kirklees districts of West Yorkshire. It offers services in three main hospital sites and in a range of community settings, as well as directly into people’s homes. The three acute hospital sites are:

  • Dewsbury and District Hospital
  • Pinderfields Hospital (Wakefield)
  • Pontefract Hospital.

Community services are provided in a range of community settings such as health centres, clinics, GP surgeries, family centres and in people’s own homes. This means our patients benefit from hospital and community services working more closely together ensuring they receive their care in the most appropriate place for them – when and where they need it.

The Trust also provides two specialist regional services, in burns and spinal injuries, which are renowned across the North of England and beyond for their facilities and excellent care.

With over 9,000 staff and an income in excess of £850 million, the Trust provides its services by working in partnership with a range of organisations. This includes being part of the West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership (Integrated Care Board), working locally with two local authorities via the two Integrated Care Board Places of Wakefield and North Kirklees, and with a wide range of other providers including voluntary organisations and private sector organisations. These partnerships facilitate a holistic approach to the delivery of health and social care that places patients, their carers, and the public at the heart of decision making.

The NHS continues to face significant and sustained pressures, alongside increasing demand for urgent and emergency care, growing waiting lists, workforce shortages, financial constraints and rising public expectations.

Across Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, these pressures are reflected in:

  • Increasing demand across urgent and emergency care pathways
  • Delays in patient flow and discharge
  • Continued pressure on elective recovery and waiting times
  • Workforce availability and recruitment challenges
  • Financial constraints and productivity expectations
  • The need to continuously improve quality and patient safety

At the same time, the Trust remains committed to working collaboratively with our partners across Wakefield, North Kirklees and the West Yorkshire Integrated Care System to improve health outcomes, reduce inequalities and strengthen local services.

Our core values

Caring: Ensuring quality of care is at the heart of everything we do.

High Standards: Taking responsibility for providing the best services and patient experience.

Improving: We always look for ways to improve what we do. We encourage involvement, value contributions and listen to, and positively act on, feedback.

Respect: Showing value and respect for everyone and treating others as we would wish to be treated.

Our Recovery & Improvement Strategy

Between April 2026 and March 2029, the Trust will focus on four clear organisational priorities.

These priorities reflect the areas where focused improvement is required to support recovery, improve patient outcomes and experience, strengthen organisational performance and ensure long-term sustainability.

This approach represents a deliberate move away from a broader strategic framework towards a more focused set of priorities that will enable teams across the organisation to align improvement activity and deliver measurable outcomes.

NHS Leadership Competency Framework

Leaders in the NHS help deliver better health and care for patients by setting the tone for their organisation, team culture and performance. We have worked with a wide range of leaders from across the NHS to help describe what we do when we operate at our best.

The competency domains are aligned to Our NHS People PromiseOur Leadership Way  the Seven Principles of Public Life (Nolan Principles), appendix 1.

The competency domains reflect the NHS values and the following diagram shows how they are aligned:

Our partnerships

Good partnership working is essential to deliver better health and social care to local communities. The Trust works hard to develop and transform services in partnership with other acute trusts, local Primary Care Networks, local authorities, the third sector and other providers.

As an active member of the West Yorkshire Integrated Care System (ICS), the Trust proactively leads key programmes of work and has adopted leadership roles within the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT).

Our key partnership priorities are:

  • Working with the Integrated Care System to develop the future governance within West Yorkshire and Harrogate.
  • Continue to develop relationships with local Primary Care Networks (PCNs) in Wakefield and North Kirklees to improve patient pathways.
  • Play a leading role in the development of the Integrated Care Partnerships (ICP) in Wakefield and Kirklees.
  • Continue to work with Wakefield and Kirklees Integrated Care Board (ICB) in delivering shared services.
  • Work with WYAAT members to further develop procurement services across the acute Trusts.
  • Alongside other WYAAT trusts continue to develop clinical networks
  • Working with Independent Sector organisations to support the reduction of Trust waiting times for elective services.
